COLORPOINT BREEDING

Breeding registered Colorpoint Shorthairs is done with the goal of producing a show winning Colorpoint. Usually the best quality Siamese available are used with Colorpoints. As the number of outstanding Colorpoints in the United States is rather small, this is necessary to keep the gene pool viable. It is hoped that eventually the Oriental Shorthair would be recognized as an outcross breed as well, as the Oriental and Colorpoint are both hybrids based on the Siamese body type from virtually identical background breeds.

PICTURED: CFA GRAND PREMIER SUTTER'S FIRECRACKER, REDPOINT

What is a Colorpoint Shorthair? If you think this looks like a redpoint Siamese, it's because that's exactly what a redpoint Colorpoint Shorthair is - a Siamese in the color red. This breed also comes in creampoint, particolor point including seal-tortie, blue-cream, lilac-cream, and chocolate-tortiepoint. In addition, there are the lynxpoint colors including red, seal, blue, chocolate and lilac lynxpoint, plus the lynxpoint colors combined with tortiepoint to create the various colors of tortie lynxpoints. These colors are all accepted for show. For the official show classifications of these as well as the CFA breed standards, please visit the web site of The Cat Fanciers' Association.

The type of a Colorpoint is exactly the same as that of the Siamese - a long, lithe, muscular cat with very fine bones, long legs, a wedge-shaped head with large, flared ears forming a triangle from the tip of the nose out to the tips of the ears with a flat profile, strong chin and deep blue, almond-shaped eyes that are slanted in an oriental fashion to fit into the sleek lines of the wedge. The neck is also long and slender. The coat is tight, short and fine, and in all colors the body color is much lighter than the points to give the contrast that identifies all the Siamese-derived pointed breeds. While some allowance is made for older cats to have darker bodies than young ones, the ideal Colorpoint maintains the contrast through life. The slow-developing red color in some lines causes the contrast to intensify as the cat ages.

Personality is the most endearing quality of the Colorpoint, as it is of the Siamese. These cats are very affectionate, sometimes demanding of attention, and want to share all aspects of your life. Like the Siamese, they are playful, active cats that are entertaining to their human families as well as to each other. Many people have two or more so that the cats have companionship while their humans are away at work. They are known to be very vocal, just like their Siamese and Oriental brothers and sisters.
